CREATING A CIRCULAR ECONOMY
The sustainable and practical management of solid waste is an arguably universal environmental concern, a common entry point for sustainability initiatives across all scales. WMSBF promotes a circular economy mindset and the understanding that waste has economic value by leveraging and expanding research, education, demonstration projects, and market development. We also support and promote landfill diversion.
We define a circular economy as a regenerative system in which resource inputs, waste, emissions, and energy leakage are minimized by slowing, closing, and narrowing material and energy loops. It’s a new way of thinking about material management, enabled by practical strategies that can help local businesses and institutions reduce waste, improve profitability and support their communities. Just the scrap value of landfilled material alone is a $400 milliion opportunity for Michigan.
The Opportunity
A 2016 study by West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum found that West Michigan disposes of an estimated $52 milllion of recyclable material in local landfills each year.
